Brainstorming is a great formative activity. It gives the tutor a quick guide to what learners already know (including the related vocabulary) and understand about a certain topic.
Brainstorming also gets learners into the mode of thinking about the topic and what might be covered.

A word wall helps to create a print rich environment for learners, and can be a wonderful tool that is designed to promote group learning.
Learners can create word walls related to specific topics.
