These phonological awareness activities are to help tauira identify individual sounds in words. They include: teaching syllable awareness, teaching onset-rime awareness and teaching phonemic awareness.
High frequency words (step 1)
Key words (step 2)
Identify words with same sound but different spelling, for example, lie, bite, high, fly (step 3)
Syllables are “chunks of sound”
Select multiple syllable words from a relevant text and ask learners to chunk them into syllables while reading each word to them
An alternative activity is to chunk the words them into syllables on cards, read the words aloud and ask learners to choose the chunks of sound to create each word
to help learners read new or difficult words
Syllables activities also help with spelling
In pairs, practise reading skills on a selection of short extracts from texts with different purposes (for example, from a letter, an advertisement, a notice, a story) highlighting any unknown words.
